While I wish the site could be rebuilt exactly as it was, this is impossible.  I therefore think we should make Lily Glen the best horse camping location it can be. In my opinion this means a more modern, equine and equestrian friendly, environment.

The historic barn was nice, but it’s gone. I'd rather move on to something more practical and less maintenance. And something that won't cost a fortune to do!

Whatever is built, make sure the park remains a horse facility and has everything needed to make it an equine destination park.

All over the country we have lost or are losing our historic buildings and areas to progress, destruction or vandalism.. I would like to see this particular area rebuilt in the "way it was" to keep our history alive.  There are not many places left like this in Oregon although Oregon is the end of the Oregon Trail and has a great historical advantage in that fact..

Since this is/was an historic building, I would like to see it replicated to as close to its original state as possible.  I know this was used constantly by horse people and mostly youth riders and I want to see this continue for the future youth in equestrian endeavors.  There is grant money out there that could be used.

A barn at a camp ground is kind of a unique concept. Doesn't feel much like camping. The historic value is the important factor, otherwise I want my horse in my camp.

I WOULD LIKE TO SEE A MINIMUM AMOUNT OF DISTURBANCE TO THE AREA OUTSIDE OF THE BARN & CORRALS AREA.  IT SEEMS WE HAVE FORGOTTEN WHY THE AREA IS CALLED LILY GLEN.  I HAVE BEEN UP THERE EARLY IN THE SPRING AND SEEN THE THOUSANDS OF LILIES IN BLOOM.  I HAVEN'T BEEN THERE IN RECENT YEARS EARLY IN THE SEASON, SO DON'T KNOW HOW

MANY HAVE SURVIVED.

PLEASE, PLEASE make water available WITHOUT having to manually pump it.  The manual pumps are extremely hard to pump for some women and make it unappealing to camp there.  Thanks for your consideration in this matter.

That old barn was a great historical item for viewing construction methods in the early days, but as a practical horse facility, it was dank and dingy, and hardly anybody used it if the corrals were available. Rebuilding should be more for practical usage.

I would like to see it made as much as possible as the old one with just one improvement on the outside corrals being covered.

I loved that barn, but time passes. The last option gives the most and a roof would just be fine.

I think it only suitable to replace the original barn with one as close to it as is possible.  Lily Glen was donated to be a place for horsemen, and should remain in the original condition.  The history and originality of Lily Glen is a large part of the beauty for me.

I would love to see this site reopened.  I have been coming there from southern California since the 1980's.  Now that I live in southern Oregon I go one or two time a year. I know that it will not be an expensive place to maintain but I would like to see the facility made available to the Pony club and 4-H groups.  It could be an important park and possibly they could help in the maintenance.  At one time I was told they could not afford to use the facility because of the fee.

REMOVE THE CATTLE GUARD!!!!! Repair the perimeter fencing and gates, put up more corrals (a bit larger would be nice) for an individual to rent that are not connected to the group rental areas. Make a covered site for group gatherings and BBQs, and make it easier to get fresh water; the pumps are very difficult to use for many of us. Thanks for listening.

This is such an asset to our community. When the new roof was being put on the barn, I was newly arrived to the area and was so impressed by the community spirit and co-operation. Even community members who did not have horses joined in the effort to restore this historical treasure. I have since used the facilities for day use as well as camping. I would be willing to help with the rebuilding in any way I can.

I'd like to have more campsites with corrals right next to the campsites, spread out across a much wider area.  In addition, my opinions expressed about the barn would benefit from a discussion, in person or on line, with people who have researched the pros and cons of each option. My votes are based on my own, rather limited scope of experience at Lily Glen.  I have ridden there about 12 times.  I would prefer that my opinions and votes be based on an understanding of everyone's needs.

Tough choices since I would prefer different things depending on funding! The old barn was lovely in a historical way, but also not highly practical. Having indoor space to use in terrible weather was great, although it's not available at any other horse camp. I would love to see the style of the outside of the old barn reproduced, but perhaps more usable/ more light on the inside. Or maybe simply a large covered space. I don't feel we need to put roofs over the stalls, but it is nice when horse camp stalls have ridge poles for the horse owners to throw tarps over if it does rain.

I belong to many groups that could provide volunteer help during the barn rebuild process and in the future. Oregon Equestrian Trails, Cascade Pony Club, Eventers of Eastern and Central Oregon, and Driving Enthusiasts of Central Oregon are some of the groups that I belong to that have an interest in Lily Glen. Feel free to contact me.

Metal corrals may be a good choice with R/R tie posts.  Less likely to burn, and may a big fire break around the grounds.

I have never been to Lily Glen, but have heard how nice it is, and always wanted to go. As nice as it would be to have the original re-built, it would probably be more cost effective and efficient to have all or most of the existing and any new corrals have some sort of shelter, for those of us that don't mind a little wet weather riding.

I don't feel there should be any new barn built. The old barn was very nice but it is done. Nothing last forever so move on to something new. Why spend 1000's of dollars to build a new barn when simple corrals would do. We don't bring our horses there for the nice barn but for the nice riding and being out doors.

Though I love the idea of recreating the old barn...it was beautiful, I don't think it was very practical.  I would like to see more corrals available.  It would be nice to have a modern barn that looks like an old barn.  Hope that makes sense.  Best of luck.

I would like to see a barn that is similar in appearance to the old one but more useful on the inside than the old one.  Perhaps an area where registration for events and indoor meetings can be held.  I would suggest that it be built out of as many fireproof materials as possible -- such as steel framing and metal roof -- just in case!

The old barn at Lily Glen had a nice ambiance but would not be practical by today's usage standards. For example the height of the roof, which allowed storage of feed, is no longer necessary. Money saved could possibly be used for additional and better toilet facilities. Maybe even showers like those over at Howard Prairie. A couple of warm up/round pens would be nice for when a green horse is brought up to the camp.  Additionally a design that will minimize cost of upkeep would be good since this is to be funded by donations not tax dollars that come in with regularity. If this project is kept funded by the private sector then the county or state has less to say about how this area gets utilized.

I was proud the Olympic Horse trials were held here when I was a youngster. I would like to see this beautiful horse camp once again get employed in this way.

90

Dear Sir or Madame;

I no longer live in the area, but I demolish industrial sites for a living.  Often, I have buildings that are in perfect condition, but they are often cheaper to demolish than to salvage.  However, I may have opportunities whereby my clients can donate large pre-manufactured structures that just need to be dismantled and can be re-erected at a new location, then configured to meet new needs (like an equestrian center).  Perhaps this is an option for you?  If so, I would be happy to assist you in evaluating options and seeing what is available.  Feel free to contact me at the email address below.

I wasn't aware that there WAS a Lily Glen Horse Camp! My suggestion would be to have more information put out to the public about the camp.

Many years ago, my husband took our four boys up to Lily Glen to camp, fish and ride on the trails. My brother and sister-in-law also came along. The guys had a ball fishing (or trying to) and we girls went riding! The horses spent the night in the old barn. I have great memories of that barn! Looking forward to seeing Lily Glen Barn rebuilt one way or the other!

There is a paint-on fire proofing, to cover wooden beams and poles that might be of BIG help here. I think that a replica of the old barn is what would be right. I'd strongly suggest that a metal roof would be better than a shake roof, and that should be the only departure from the original design.  That FIRE PROOF paint I mentioned above is actually a salt; it won't burn, and it might be at risk of being cribbed. With that in mind, I'd probably wrap all beams in sheet metal to a height of about 8 feet. This would help fire proof those posts, and it would keep other critters from chewing on them too, after all, I've seen porcupines EAT siding up there at Hyatt.  Also, just setting up dummy surveillance cameras in metal, bullet-proof boxes would help.. along with signs saying "you are already on film"..also..there's a phone line across the street, so maybe a camera CAN be set up for surveillance? Maybe a wireless transmission to a VHS machine at the County barn? As you might have ventured to guess, I'm a construction contractor, and would be glad to lend a hand. Money is kind of tight right now, what with this being the slow season and all, but I'm right there to lend a hand with the rebuild..

My personal opinion is that whatever is built, the architecture should complement and reflect the mountain setting of the area, and it should have a metal roof. Beyond that, just about anything would be OK.

I am the Chairman of the Josephine County Equestrian Coalition (JCEC). Our group is primarily oriented towards bringing together and representing in total the horse people of Josephine county, to address issues of common interest.  We have a website, JCEC.org. Our group has been watching closely the progress of the Lily Glen project, and would like to help in whatever way we can. We will continue to be available when your decision is made on how to proceed, or if you want input from our group I can be contacted at this email address or phone.  You guys seem to be doing things right, so keep up the good work, even in the face of discouragement which is sure to be present in some degree from time to time.

Why not a large covered arena, this would be multi-purpose. There are no free arenas in the area for groups or individuals to use for a variety of purposes..........There is no way to replace the historic significance of the original barn.........so why spend that much money on something that is of use to just a few........

A barn would be wonderful, but I think the priority is to make the site as horse-friendly as possible to the most number of horses it can. It is unfortunate that what is cost-effective is important, but it is-and corrals include more volunteers in the construction than classic barn building.

My wife and I are neighbors of this historic place. We have property one mile east and are planning to build soon. We are from pioneer families to this area ourselves, and are saddened by the fire, and would love to see it rebuilt the same as it was before. I would hope that the BLM would donate timbers to replace the hand hewn timbers destroyed in the fire. The circular sawn board siding can also be replicated. I know it would be very difficult to reproduce this beautiful building. It would also be a mistake to not try to come as close as possible to this task. Sometimes the cost of the goal pays very high dividends in the future compared to having spared the dollar and effort towards a historical and contempory value. Modifications to the interior would be acceptable as long as wood would be used. Maybe that’s asking too much. Any way, that’s our initial thoughts concerning the future of Lily Glen Horse Camp.

Just an older style wood barn.  I don't feel it has to be an exact replica.

I wish we could recapture the old barn....but it takes so much more upkeep.  A metal structure would really be much more practical.

I am a member of the Northwest Trail Riders, from Crescent City, Ca.  Although I have never been to Lily Glen, many club members have described the beautiful area and the barn. I like the idea of an open barn area due to dust and concerns of the horse’s respiratory system.  The more fresh air the better for the horses.

I would like to see an arena built at Lily Glenn also for events. I also think that horse related activities should have first priority at this particular camp.

The Lily Glen barn had historic value, but it is gone. It wasn't very useful for modern day usage. It would be nice to build something that resembled the old barn on the exterior, but was safer and more functional on the interior.

Something open-air would be best for horses. A covered area for people to gather, eat, etc would sure be nice.

I would like to see a replica of the original barn rebuilt, however I understand the cost to do so would be extremely prohibitative, so I feel a structure that is user friendly would be a better choice.

It would be nice to see something done by this summer. Right now the number of horses that can be there is very limited. Running water would be a very nice addition!

Even though I have not been to Lily Glen, this is only because my horse was too young. I look forward to visiting in the next few years.I tried to check dressage and trail riding above as well as endurance, but it wouldn't let me.

Corrals would be much more cost effective to install. They are also much easier to install using volunteer labor from groups such as OET, BCH, etc.

This is Oregon, so we do have some rain, a covered structure would be nice.  More corrals would be great too.  Replicating the barn, while it would be beautiful, would just not be the same as the original, and wouldn't serve the greater purpose I don't think.

The original barn would be nice, but is it the best use of the money. Wood barns are very expensive to build. I guess it depends on how much is collected from the public.

Since I have not been to Lilly Glen I don't know what the facilities were like.  My suggestion:  build a structure with open sides that will give folks a place to gather for meetings and cooking and ask local folks to build more corals.  A fully enclosed barn is not a prerequisite for good TRAIL riding and CAMPIING.  Use the money wisely and widely.

I think good sturdy corrals would be nice at Lily Glen....the time and money spent on a "modern building" could be spent on other corrals at other places. I truly enjoy Lily Glen, but when you’re camping.....you’re camping and a complete barn is not a necessity, only a luxury in my opinion. Good cover would also be nice....I hope my opinion is helpful.
